August in the lagoon can be a daunting experience. The city centre of Venice becomes really overwhelmingly crowded, the temperature gets incredibly high and the typical humidity does not help. It is in this period that a boat ride and an escape to the islands becomes much needed indeed.
As you know, at Osteria al Ponte del Diavolo we offer al fresco dining and have also arranged a set of fans to provide you with additional breeze! It is the last month during which we are open also at the weekend for evenings dinner, so that you can enjoy the warm shades of the sunset gradually fade into darker tones of blue, and even see the stars. In the summer evenings, the view of our back garden becomes even more special.
There are many alternative ways to experience the islands before and after your break at the restaurant. Of course, for first time visitors we believe that the most traditional visit to the ancient Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta here in Torcello is always a must. It is not possible to take photos inside, thus we cannot share any image... but it is always magical, with its golden mosaics, some of the earliest in the Veneto region. In the main apse you can see the glorious Virgin Hodegetria, whereas on the west wall the incredible Harrowing of Hell, which is above a unique representation of the Last Judgement.
Just behind the Cathedral, you can wander along some canals and immerse yourself in pure, wild nature.
Other options, for more frequent visitors who want to do something different, are to rent a boat with or without driver and explore the lagoon (there are some very good companies offering this service, with different types of boats and price ranges) or to contact the fishmonger Domenico Rossi (through the website www.pescaburano.it), here nick-named the last catcher of moeche, the renowned soft-shelled crabs, for a boat ride aimed at the discovery of a traditional fishing technique and -most importantly- to get to know better the lagoon itself, with the changes it's going through.
Of course, we will do our best to make your lunch or dinner stop at Osteria al Ponte del Diavolo the highlight of your day in the North lagoon; we will take care of you and delight your palate with our seasonal menu based on local ingredients. The best thing of being in Torcello in the relaxing and peaceful atmosphere of a private garden, is that time seems to stop. We are not sure whether it is the air of Torcello or our food, but people seem to feel almost spellbound and we consider ourselves lucky to experience the same emotion everyday.
Fresh homemade pasta, fish caught daily and brought directly by the fishmongers, vegetables as fresh as can be, high quality meat and bread and desserts made daily by our beloved pastry chef Daniel. Ingredients worked with passion and presented in dishes that add a more contemporary creative touch to tradition and enhance different flavor combinations.
